FDA Allows Health Claim For Walnuts
Friday December 12, 2003
A petition filed by the California Walnut Commission has been accepted by the Food and Drug Administration recognizing the cholesterol-lowering properties of walnuts. A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine back in 2000 examined the cholesterol-lowering effects of walnuts. Patients were required to incorporate walnuts into their everyday diet. As a result, participants lowered their "bad" LDL cholesterol by almost 6% and heart disease risk by 11%.
