A Link Between High Cholesterol and Alzheimer's Disease?
Saturday January 24, 2004
A new study published last year in the Archives of Neurology demonstrates a strong link between high cholesterol levels and Alzheimer's disease. This study focuses specifically on a mutation occurring in the enzyme CYP46, which is responsible for cholesterol metabolism in the brain. Other risks for Alzheimer's disease include specific mutations in the gene that makes apolipoprotein E, a specific type of lipoprotein that carries cholesterol from the blood into the brain. Of course, there are more studies needed to verify this, but this gives us insight as to other possible consequences of having high cholesterol. Read about this interesting finding here.
