Should All Diabetics Take Cholesterol Medication?

Friday June 25, 2004
According to the American Diabetes Association, approximately 18.2 million Americans have some form of diabetes mellitus. I am one of these individuals and must pay close attention to what I eat in order to keep healthy. While my cholesterol levels have been pretty good with diet and exercise, the risk of atherosclerosis, heart disease, and stroke automatically increases when you have diabetes. This is because high glucose levels decrease the amount of HDL (good cholesterol) and increase the amount of triglycerides that is in the body. A new study sponsored by Pfizer in Great Britain reveals the effectiveness of diabetics taking statin medications. According to the study, diabetics were able to cut their risk of having a stroke by 37% when taking a statin drug. Read more about this finding here.
