High Doses of Zocor ® May Not Be As Effective As Scientists Once Thought
Tuesday August 31, 2004
A study published a recent issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association concluded that simvastatin, which is manufactured under the tradename Zocor ®, showed no increased benefits when administered in higher doses. The study involved roughly 4500 patients that had recent heart "events" (like a heart attack or stroke). At the conclusion of the study, 14.4% of patients initially taking simvastatin were readmitted to the hospital due to another heart event, whereas 16.7% of patients initially taking the placebo suffered from another heart event. Also, 0.4 % of the patients taking a high dose of simvastatin suffered from severe muscle weakness and pain. Read about this study here.
