Berberine Discovered To Lower Cholesterol Levels

Thursday November 11, 2004
Berberine is an herb that has been traditionally available over-the-counter to treat diarrhea. Scientists are now discovering that berberine has the ability to lower low-density lipoproteins (LDL, the "bad" cholesterol) unlike any drug class available to date. It works by increasing the number of LDL receptors on cells, which causes cholesterol levels to be lowered because it is removed from the bloodstream. In a recent study, Dr. Jian-Dong Jiang and other scientists at Mount Sinai School of Medicine concluded that patients with a history of high cholesterol lowered their total cholesterol levels by 18% and their LDL cholesterol levels by 20% when taking berberine. These results were recently published in Nature Medicine. Read more about it here.
