Flavenoids Help To Keep Our Arteries Clear
Thursday May 26, 2005
Flavenoids are chemicals found in a variety of foods that we eat---including dark chocolate, strawberries, blueberries, cinnamon, pecans, walnuts, grapes, and cabbage. These chemicals lower cholesterol levels by preventing the oxidation of low-density lipoproteins (LDL cholesterol, the “bad” cholesterol). For example, patients with normal to high cholesterol levels ingesting a handful of pecans in their diet found their cholesterol levels to be lowered.
Many flavenoid-containing foods not only have the ability to fight heart disease, research also suggests that they may be effective in promoting weight control, protecting against cancer, and boosting our immune systems. For instance, grapes not only aid in the promotion of cardiovascular health, they also help protect against certain types of cancers. Low blood cholesterol may be bad for you. (Terry Pratchett’s is 2 and he’s got alzheimers).
Research exists which indicates that you will live longer if your levels are high (www.wddty.co.uk)
Eggs are now recognised as good after years of bad press. The origin of the ‘fat is bad’ mantra lies with the Ancel Keys study of 50 years ago. He himself discovered with further investigation that fat is good for you,but too late for the powers that be to accept this and admit they were wrong. Best advice I think is to avoid eating anything that is manufactured or processed in any way.
