Types of Low Cholesterol, Low Fat Diets
Guide picks
There are many types of diets that have been developed that implement low cholesterol, low fat foods. Before you decide to follow one of these diets, consult with your health care practitioner.

The Dean Ornish Diet
Dean Ornish actually consists of two diets, the Reversal Diet and the Prevention Diet, which are designed for individuals who already have heart disease and individuals who want to prevent heart disease respectively. These diets not only promote lower cholesterol levels, but also aid in weight loss.

The Vegetarian Diet
The vegetarian diet excludes meat, poultry, and fish products and includes a diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, and grains. Their diet may also include nuts, seeds, and a variety of soy products that serve as a meat substitute in many cases.

The Pritikin Diet
The Pritikin Diet is almost vegetarian and encourages the consumption of large amounts of whole grains and vegetables. Accompanying this low-fat, high-fiber diet is an exercise program that requires at least 45 minutes of walking a day.

The Mediterranean Pyramid Diet
The Mediterranean Pyramid diet allows the consumption of many grains, fruits, and vegetables. Red meat is extremely limited in this diet, but fish and poultry are allowed as the main source of protein. Milk products are used moderately and olive oil is used as the primary fat with this diet. This diet also includes drinking wine with meals.
