(LifeWire) - Homocysteine is an amino acid found naturally in the bloodstream. Evidence suggests that high levels of this amino acid damage the lining of blood vessels, affecting the development of
atherosclerosis. As a result, high levels of homocysteine also increase the risk of
stroke, heart disease and
peripheral vascular
disease. Homocysteine levels can be checked with a blood test.
A deficiency of folic acid and vitamins B6 and B12 is often a cause of high homocysteine; increasing intake of these vitamins will reduce homocysteine levels, although trials of vitamins to reduce homocysteine levels have not been shown to offer any measurable benefit. To get more folic acid and B vitamins in your diet, eat fruits, leafy green vegetables, lentils, beans and fortified breakfast cereals.
