Definition: A foam cell is one of the first cells found at the site of the fatty streak, which is the beginning of atherosclerotic plaque formation in vessels.

Oxidized LDL can promote inflammation in vessels. When this occurs, immune system cells called macrophages are attracted to the site of inflammation. While at the site, they consume LDL cholesterol. This causes the cells to appear “foamy," hence the name foam cells.
