An Additional Mechanism of Action For Zetia (Ezetimibe) Is Discovered

Zetia (ezetimibe) is a cholesterol-lowering drug that has been noted to reduce cholesterol absorption in the small intestine. A protein found in the small intestine, NPC1l1, has been found to be responsible for cholesterol absorption. Recently, it has been discovered that Zetia (ezetimibe) also lowers cholesterol by working in the liver through the same NPC1l1 protein.

The FDA Has Approved a New Indication for Zetia®

The FDA has approved a new use for ezetimibe in patients that have mixed hyperlidemia. The new indication calls for the use of ezetimibe with fenofibrate, a cholesterol-lowering drug from the fibrate drug class, when diet and exercise alone are not enough to lower cholesterol levels.

Adding Zetia To Statins Greatly Improves Lipid Profile

Recent studies have suggested that Zetia, a new cholesterol-lowering medication that lowers cholesterol by blocking its absorption from the small intestine, may enhance the effectiveness of statins, a powerful class of cholesterol-lowering medications. Additionally, no additional side effects were seen with this combination.
