Arteriosclerosis is a general term that refers to the loss of elasticity and thickening of the arteries. While there are a few types of arteriosclerosis, the condition atherosclerosis is the most commonly noted form of arteriosclerosis. Because of its frequency in the population, arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis are sometimes used interchangeably.
Atherosclerosis is also the type of arteriosclerosis that can be caused by persistently high cholesterol levels. When coupled with inflammation of the artery, cholesterol and other lipids can form a thick plaque that can thicken the opening of the artery, thus reducing blood flow.
