Definition:

LDL apheresis is a medical procedure, similar to dialysis, that selectively filters LDL, or “bad” cholesterol, from the body. During this procedure, LDL cholesterol is removed from the blood, and the remaining blood and components are returned to the body.

LDL apheresis is reserved as a last resort for treating very high LDL levels, when cholesterol lowering medications are not tolerated or are not enough to lower LDL cholesterol.

Also Known As: cholesterol apheresis
Alternate Spellings: LDL aphaeresis
