Definition: Phytosterols are cholesterol-like compounds that lower cholesterol by interfering with absorption of cholesterol from the small intestine. They mainly work by lowering LDL, or “bad” cholesterol.

Phytosterols are found in many types of healthy foods, such as fruits, nuts, vegetables, whole grains, and oils derived from vegetables. They may also be found in certain foods and vitamin supplements.
