When you envision lowering your cholesterol levels through diet, eating cheese probably doesn’t fit anywhere in your vision. Thanks to a new ingredient manufactured by Forbes Medi-Tech Inc in Vancouver, Canada, cheese may be added back into the diets of those cheese lovers who are trying to watch their cholesterol levels.

What makes this cheese different from its high fat counterparts? This particular cheddar cheese, marketed under the name Heartfelt Plus Natural Cheese, contains Reducol. Reducol is a phytosterol, which is a plant sterol that has shown promise in lowering cholesterol levels. In addition to this ingredient, this cheese is also lower in fat. The typical cheese contains up to 40% fat. This cheese, on the other hand, contains only 12% fat.

Currently, this cheese is only available in the United Kingdom. Although it is not known whether or not the taste of this cheese compares with its fattier counterparts, Forbes Medi-Tech Inc. states that its composition and taste are better in comparison to some of the other low-fat cheeses currently on the market.
