Definition: Carotid endarterectomy is a surgical procedure that removes plaque from the carotid arteries.

A carotid endarterectomy is usually performed when a plaque in the carotid artery becomes so thick that it obstructs blood flow to the brain. This procedure removes the plaque in the affected area and restores blood flow.
