An activity and diet support system is essential for any successful weight loss plan. Remember that there is strength in numbers and that your weight loss efforts will be more fruitful if others are on board to motivate and assist you. Read on for expert opinions and tips on the importance of having a weight loss support system.

Importance of a Support

"Utilizing the support of others is one of the primary means of coping with challenging events in one's life, including a weight loss plan," says Sandra T. Mann, Psy.D., Licensed Psychologist, George Washington University (Washington, DC).

How Friends and Family Help

Changing one's lifelong eating and activity habits can be an unsuspected source of psychological stress. "Social support can serve as a buffer in times of stress and as a catalyst when undergoing major change," adds Mann.

Communicate Support Needs

"Find ways your friends and family can contribute to your weight loss success," Dr. Mann advises. Be sure to communicate to them what you find helpful. Do you benefit from a weekly call of support from friends? Is working out with a family member the best way for you to stay motivated?

Team Effort

"Consider forming a 'weight loss team'. Part of this team should certainly be loved ones. It is most effective if everyone in the house follows the same eating plan," recommends D. Milton Stokes, MPH, RD, dietitian in private practice and co-author of Flat Belly Diet! for Men (Rodale, 2009).

Bottom Line

To lose weight and improve your health, it is best to involve friends and family in your efforts. Identify how they can best help you and seek out the support you need.
