From the article: How to Prevent High Cholesterol in Children
High cholesterol in children is becoming more common. This is in part due to heredity, obesity, and diet, but it's also largely owed to the fact that a sedentary lifestyle has become very common amongst kids.
Fortunately, by making some minor adjustments in your child's life -- like upping his activity -- you can help prevent your child's cholesterol levels from getting out of hand, reducing his risk for long-term complications such as diabetes and heart disease.
How do you keep your kids active year round? Whether it is limiting TV and computer time, or encouraging participation in a sport, share your tips. Share Your Tips
What I Do For My Kids
- I am trying to make my kids more active, so I have started exercising with them at least three days a week. We will play sports together, like basketball or soccer, or will go cycling together. This gives both me and my kids a way to exercise.

Make them exercise!
- When I was a kid and when I had kids, they were always outside playing. Now, kids today will play computer games and watch TV, instead of getting the exercise they need. I think that going back to the notion in today's kids of going outside and riding bikes or playing a sport outside will help offset some of the problems we are seeing with cholesterol and obesity.

LIMIT TV TIME
- I have drastically limited the amount of time my three kids sit in front of the TV. I allott them an hour a day for TV, and this includes their Wii and shows they like to watch. This encourages them to go outside and be creative, and of course not obese. They don't seem to mind it, either.

sports
- I make my kids play sports, instead of them watching TV all day. They play on a basketball and soccer team, so they get plenty of exercise year round.
