Definition:

Eicosapentaenoic acid, or EPA, is an omega-3, polyunsaturated fatty acid that can be mainly found in supplements and in fatty fish, such as salmon, seaweed, tuna, mackerel and herring. EPA has the ability to reduce inflammation in high doses, and has been studied in certain inflammatory conditions, psychological conditions, and high blood pressure.

Studies have also shown that EPA, when combined with DHA, can help lower triglyceride levels in individuals with hypertriglyceridemia and reduce risk of death, another stroke, or another heart attack in individuals who have coronary heart disease.

Also Known As: 20:5n-3, timnodonic acid
Alternate Spellings: icosapentaenoic acid
