Definition: A lipoprotein consists of a protein that is combined to a lipid, or fat. Lipids typically do not travel alone in the blood. Instead, they bind to a protein that will carry it to its correct destination in the body.

There are many different types of lipoproteins circulating in the body, including:

  • Very low density lipoproteins (VLDL)
  • Intermediate density lipoproteins (IDL)
  • Low density lipoproteins (LDL)
  • High density lipoproteins (HDL)
Each of these particles perform different functions and can be detrimental (VLDL, IDL, LDL) or beneficial (HDL) to your heart health.
