Wondering why brown rice recipes are recommended for people with high cholesterol? "Brown rice" is rice in its most natural state, while "white rice" is brown rice with the bran and germ portion removed. Since the bran and germ contain the majority of rice's fiber, vitamins and minerals, white rice is largely devoid of nutrients.

It is especially important for people with high cholesterol to eat a high-fiber and nutrient-rich diet. White rice may also cause a spike in blood glucose levels when eaten by itself. Because cardiovascular disease and diabetes are often risk factors for one another, it is recommended that patients with high cholesterol also avoid major spikes in blood sugar. For all of these reasons, brown rice is your best choice on a cholesterol-friendly diet.
