Sandwich wraps are a tasty addition to your low-cholesterol diet plan. Read on for tips on making them a part of your daily routine.
Select Smart Wraps
The first step to making a healthy wrap is to start with a reasonably sized whole grain wrap with a calorie count within 200 calories, according to Jessica Butcher, RD, dietitian in Grand Haven, Michigan. Butcher points out that your choice of wrap size is important. "If you are not paying attention, it's easy to add up to 500 calories from an extra-large processed flour tortilla, which is not going to be very kind to the waistline." Butcher provides adds that for those struggling through the transition from white flour to whole grains, a tasty option is a 'white' whole grain wrap, such as FlatOut Tm brand.
Protein Power
"Seek out your lean protein of choice as your main filling," recommends Butcher. "Whether you are opting for fresh turkey breast or black beans, the protein will provide you with the satiety you need to squelch those hunger pangs for a bit longer."
Flavorful Fillings
Next, Butcher suggests adding a low-fat and low-calorie flavor. "There are plenty of ways to zest up your meal with low-calorie flavorings, including fresh herbs (cilantro and sweet basil are my favorites!), white balsamic vinegar, salsa, citrus, spices, peppers, pickles, or even honey mustard."
Veggie Power
"Of course, don't forget the vegetables. Vegetables such as fresh leafy greens, and crunchy sprouts, cucumber, and jicama are packed with phytonutrients, fiber, and water -- all helping you to feel full faster"
More Great Fillings
